The Lunch Lady Everyone Loved

There was something special about school lunches back when everything was made from scratch. Long before frozen foods and prepackaged meals filled cafeterias, the lunchroom was full of homemade goodness prepared with love and care. And for me, that love came straight from my grandma’s kitchen.

My grandma was the head cook at the school for many years, and she poured her heart into every meal she made. Lunches only cost 35 cents back then, and Grandma made sure I always had mine paid for each day. Looking back now, it wasn’t just a lunch — it was a gift of love from her.

The smell of homemade meals would fill the hallways long before lunchtime arrived. You could find not only the students lined up with trays in hand, but teachers and staff too, all eager for a hot homemade meal. Everything was made from scratch, the way cooking used to be — with simple ingredients, hard work, and a whole lot of love.

I was fortunate enough to get a few of her recipes from those school kitchen days, and every time I make one, I’m taken right back to those memories. But the one recipe I wish I had most is her famous rolls.

Those rolls were the highlight of lunchtime. Soft, warm, buttery, and fresh from the oven — everyone hoped there would be seconds. Somehow, they always tasted even better when you were lucky enough to grab another one. To this day, I still remember the smell of them baking and the excitement of seeing them on the lunch tray.

As I continue this journey through Grandma’s recipes, I realize these dishes are so much more than food. They tell the story of love, family, hard work, and simpler times. They remind me of a woman who fed an entire school with kindness and homemade meals, one tray at a time.

Do you remember homemade school lunches or someone special who cooked meals that brought people together? I would love to hear your memories and stories too.

Here is a picture of my beautiful grandma, a woman who meant the world to me and is missed every single day. She was one of the greatest influences in my life and one of the reasons I am who I am today.

Some of my favorite memories are of watching her in the kitchen, cooking and baking for family, friends, and anyone who walked through her door. She taught me that food is more than just something we eat—it is a way to show love, care, and hospitality.

As I continue to cook and bake her recipes, I find pieces of her in every dish. The smells, the flavors, and the memories bring me right back to her kitchen. So much of what I do today is because of the example she set for me.

I am truly blessed that God chose her to be my grandma. She was a rare gem of a lady, full of kindness, generosity, and love. Her legacy lives on in the recipes she left behind, the lessons she taught, and the many lives she touched.

I miss her dearly, but I am forever grateful for the time we shared and the memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life. ❤️
